What is Rooibos (Red) Tea?

Rooibos (pronounced,  (ROY-boss) is a natural tea created from the leaves of a broom-like bush that grows in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It’s referred to as Bush Tea in South Africa and in sometimes called Redbush Tea in Great Britain. The color of Rooibos is the result of a fermentation process, like that of black tea, that transforms the unoxidised green leaves into a beautiful rich red.

Rooibos is free of caffeine and lower in tannins than both black and green teas. Tannins are what give tea its bitter taste and decreases the body’s capacity to retain iron and some proteins. Because of its low tannin level, it has a delectable woodsy, nutty flavor that doesn’t require the addition of different fixings to enhance it’s taste, making it zero calories, appropriate from the get go if weightloss is one of your goals.

Rooibos contains large amounts of cancer preventing antioxidants and flavinoids. In fact, red tea contains 50% more antioxidants than green tea.  Antixoxidants are molecules that have the important job of battling and moderating the oxidising process of destructive synthetic substances in our environment. Flavinoids are powerful antioxidants with anti-inflammatory and immune systems benefits. That is the reason antioxidants and flavinoids are believed to be vital in the prevention and decreased progressesion of cancer, neurodegenerative and cardiovascular disease.

Rooibos is a unique South African plant, which offers almost limitless health benefit.  The plant’s medicinal properties continue to astound scientists.  I believe we’ve only just scratched the surface of Rooibos’ incredible healing potential.”

By lowering and maintaining a healthy blood pressure level, the risk for stroke and coronary heart disease are reduced significantly. Rooibos tea is anti-inflammotory in nature, which implies that it reduces blood pressure and rummages for free radicals. Quercetin, discovered in rooibos, is a flavonoid, a polyphenol found in fruits and vegetables like capers, red onions, kale, and cilantro, just to name a select few. It has been connected to preventing a wide assortment of heart conditions.  Quercetin protects againsts radicals that are attributed to cell membrane damage, DNA changes and cellular mortality.  It helps to improve the level of HDL cholesterol (healthy cholesterol) and reduces the LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) from sticking to the walls of arteries and blood vessels.

Reduces the Risk for Type II Diabetes

Aspalathin is a rare antioxidant, that has only been found in Rooibos, and is found in abundance in the plant’s leaves. Although, this unique polyphenol looses in potency due the oxidation process of fermentation, it remains as one of the major antioxidants in the tea.  it has various special characteristics. It can balance glucose, improve insulin resistance, assist with glucose intake by the muscles, and boosts insulin secretion from the pancreas. This adds up to an impressive protection against developing type II diabetes.

Contributes to Weightloss

Rooibos contains no fat or carbohydrates and its bioflavonoid Aspalathin helps reduce stress hormones which lead to hunger and fat storage. Aspalathin inhibits the growth of new fat cells by as much as 22%. Rooibos is naturally sweet which means it deosn’t require the addition of calorie-boosting sugars which is often the case with the more bitter black tea.

Luteolin is, yet another, antioxidant that is found in Rooibos.  It has been found to kill cancer cells and prevent tumor growth. Luteolin has long been used in Chinese tradional medicine for treating various diseases including cancer.

Luteolin meddles with a wide range of cancer cells. It restrains the development of new blood vessels in tumors, the metabolism of cancer-causing agents, and additionally stops the progress of the cell cycle in cancer cells. Luteolin also prompts  apoptosis, cell suicide, in cancer cells. Luteolin was used in experiments on mice to suppress the development of tumors formed from human skin carcinoma, hepatoma and human ovarian growth cells.

Prevents Kidney Stones

Rooibos doesn’t contain oxalate unlike black tea, and to a lesser extent, green tea.  Oxalic acid is one of the key elements in the formation of kidney stones.  Individuals over the age of 40 years and women with low estrogen levels due to postmenopause or removal of ovaries are at a higher risk for developing kidney stones.  The oxalic acid forms crystals in the kidneys that bind together to form stones. While drinking Rooibos may not be an absolute cure all, combining it with a decrease in consuming other oxalate rich foods may help in the prevention of developing these painful kidney stones.
